1. Introduction to the School

    METTA NUNS' PROJECT.

In the sixth century BCE, when domination and scriptural condemnation of female was at its peak, the Buddha came forward and affirmed the equal spiritual potential of women and men. This affirmation represented a significant departure from prevailing views that defined women in terms of their biological function and their capacity for productive labor.

The Metta School was established in year 2003 by the Lumbini Social Service Foundation (LSSF). The purpose of the school is to bring the benefits of education to the underprivileged children of Lumbini and its surrounding villages. The Metta School currently serves 800 children, free of charge, from kindergarten to grade 8.

The Lumbini Social Service Foundation is guided by the various teachings and meditation practices of the Buddha. The Metta School incorporates these teachings with pedagogical methodologies to provide an education following an approved curriculum that creates awareness of local issues and prepares the children for further education.
  2. Background of the School

The beginnings of the Metta School lie in a volunteers’ group composed of local youths who were studying Buddhist practices and principles from monks in various Lumbini monasteries. These students formed a support group for their regular meditation sessions and incorporated social work activities to develop solutions to the pressing needs of the surrounding farming communities. This led to the founding of a formal primary school. Since its inception, the Metta School has received excellent support from villagers and the local farming community. Land for the creation of permanent school grounds was donated by village members as a token of encouragement.
